Understanding Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SPI)

A gentle, body-centered approach to healing trauma, anxiety, & stress if talk therapy isn’t enough.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SPI) is a specialized form of somatic therapy that blends traditional talk therapy with body awareness. Many people find that trauma, anxiety, or stress lives not only in their thoughts but also in their body—showing up as tension, discomfort, or emotional reactivity. SPI helps release those patterns by working with both mind and body for deeper, lasting healing.

SPI is especially effective in treating trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship struggles, and the impact of childhood or developmental injuries. Unlike talk therapy alone, which may feel limited when addressing unresolved trauma, SPI gently works with physical sensations and movement to help clients feel safe, grounded, and in control.

What makes Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for trauma and anxiety so powerful is that it does not require re-telling or re-living painful memories in detail. Instead, therapy sessions focus on mindful awareness of the present moment. Clients learn how to regulate emotions, build resilience, and create new, healthier patterns of response that extend into everyday life.

Because SPI is less widely known than other therapeutic approaches, it can help to think of it as an extension of traditional therapy. It complements familiar practices like CBT or talk therapy while adding a body-based dimension that many clients find transformative. For those who have tried other approaches but still feel “stuck,” somatic therapy through SPI can provide the missing piece of healing.

At Light Minded Therapy, we introduce SPI in a collaborative, approachable way. Clients are encouraged to explore at their own pace, always with an emphasis on safety, choice, and empowerment. Once experienced, many people discover SPI becomes a cornerstone of their healing journey.

What does a Sensorimotor Session Look Like?

An SPI session is similar to other talk therapy sessions, except we very deliberately include the body.

You might be invited to notice sensations, gestures, or a posture. This isn’t about performing exercises — it’s about becoming aware of what your body is communicating.  It will allow you to work through trauma even if you are not prepared to discuss it.

This work is gentle and respectful, and you won’t be pressured to revisit painful memories until you feel ready.

We go at your pace.

We build tools. Together, we develop resources to help you feel safe, present, and in control — even when intense emotions arise.
